Saim Ayub’s Future Uncertain, PCB Provides Update

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has provided a crucial update on opener Saim Ayub‘s recovery, shedding light on his fitness timeline. According to the PCB’s statement, Ayub is expected to be fit by mid-March, following his recovery from a right ankle fracture.

Ayub, who had been sidelined due to the injury during the South Africa tour in December 2024, was excluded from Pakistan’s squad for the upcoming ICC Champions Trophy 2025. The injury has delayed the official announcement of the squad for the prestigious tournament.

Recovery and Future Plans:

The left-handed batter is currently undergoing rehabilitation in England after suffering the injury on January 3, 2025. He has been out of action for 10 weeks, and his return will depend on passing the necessary fitness tests. The PCB’s statement revealed that after undergoing comprehensive medical assessments, including MRI scans and X-rays, Ayub’s recovery is progressing well.

“Pakistan opener Saim Ayub is recovering well from a right ankle fracture and will continue rehabilitation in England. His fitness for the New Zealand tour will depend on his performance in fitness tests,” the PCB statement read.

Ayub’s Impressive 2024:

Ayub had a remarkable 2024, making his debut for Pakistan in November 2024. He was a crucial part of Pakistan’s series victories in Australia and South Africa, scoring 515 runs in nine innings at an impressive average of 64.38, including three centuries. His exceptional form earned him a spot in the ICC Men’s ODI Team of the Year for 2024.

Unfortunately, Ayub’s injury occurred during the second Test in South Africa in January 2025, after which he was flown to London for specialized treatment. Initially placed on crutches, Ayub is now making solid progress in his recovery.

Return to Action:

The PCB is keeping a close eye on Ayub’s recovery as Pakistan prepares for the tri-series against New Zealand and South Africa, followed by the Champions Trophy 2025. After the tournament, Pakistan will tour New Zealand for a series of five T20Is and three ODIs from March 16 to April 5.

Ayub had been one of the standout performers in the 2024 Pakistan Super League (PSL), finishing as the fifth-highest run scorer with 345 runs. His recovery is being closely monitored by both the PCB and his PSL franchise, Peshawar Zalmi. His participation in the 2025 PSL, which starts on April 8, will depend on his fitness after the New Zealand tour.
