Fakhar Zaman Reflects on Loss Against New Zealand

Fakhar Zaman made it clear that he was not troubled by missing out on a century following Pakistan’s 78-run defeat to New Zealand in the opening match of the tri-nation ODI series.

Speaking at the post-match press conference, Fakhar expressed his disappointment with the result but clarified, “I am disappointed with the loss, but I am not concerned about not scoring a century.”

The Pakistani opener also expressed gratitude for the warm reception he received from both the team and fans after returning to the squad. “I was out of the team for a while, and I am thankful for the love and support I received from everyone upon my return,” he said.

Reflecting on the match, Fakhar shared his thoughts on watching from the dressing room at Gaddafi Stadium. “It was enjoyable to watch the match from the dressing room at Gaddafi Stadium,” he noted, highlighting the unique experience.

He also praised New Zealand captain Kane Williamson for his pivotal role in the game, which helped steer the visitors to a competitive total. “Kane Williamson played a good innings and took the match forward in a way that later benefited the Kiwi team,” Fakhar added.

While acknowledging the excitement surrounding the upcoming Champions Trophy, Fakhar assured fans that Pakistan’s immediate focus was on the current series. “We are definitely excited about the Champions Trophy, but our focus right now is on this series,” he confirmed.

When asked about Babar Azam’s form, Fakhar expressed confidence in his teammate, saying, “Babar Azam has a class of his own. You will see that he will perform.”

New Zealand secured a 78-run win, with Glenn Phillips’ unbeaten 106* and Mitchell Santner’s impressive 3/41 leading the way. Pakistan, chasing 331, were bowled out for 254, with Fakhar top-scoring with 84. Despite partnerships with Salman Ali Agha (40) and Tayyab Tahir (30), New Zealand’s bowlers, led by Santner and Matt Henry (3/53), restricted Pakistan’s progress.

Earlier, Phillips and Daryl Mitchell (81) guided New Zealand to a formidable 330/6, while Pakistan’s Shaheen Shah Afridi (3/88) and Abrar Ahmed (2/41) were the pick of the bowlers.

Looking ahead, New Zealand will face South Africa in the second match of the tri-nation series at Gaddafi Stadium on Monday. Pakistan will play South Africa on Wednesday at National Bank Stadium in Karachi for their final group-stage game of the series.
