South African young star Annerie Dercksen has been named the ICC Emerging Women’s Cricketer of the Year for 2024, earning the prestigious honor after a standout year.

Dercksen, who made her debut for South Africa in January 2023 during the T20I triangular series against India and the West Indies, has been on an impressive rise ever since.

In 2023, she played in five T20Is, but it was in 2024 that the all-rounder truly marked her presence in international cricket, making her Test and ODI debuts along the way.

While 2023 was about easing into the international stage, 2024 saw Dercksen flourishing, making significant contributions in both batting and bowling.

Key Performances:

Dercksen demonstrated excellent composure with the bat, showing versatility in both anchoring innings and guiding successful chases. A highlight of her year was her stabilizing 27 runs in South Africa’s only victory in the limited-overs series against England late in 2024.

With the ball, the medium pacer claimed 11 wickets, further establishing herself as a well-rounded player.

Dercksen’s 2024 in Review:

  • 161 runs and 5 wickets in 17 T20Is
  • 60 runs in 2 Tests
  • 70 runs and 6 wickets in 4 ODIs

Dercksen played a crucial role in South Africa’s exceptional campaign at the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2024, where the Proteas reached the final before falling to New Zealand.

Instagram Post:

Throughout the year, Dercksen maintained an impressive average of 32.2 in T20Is, rescuing South Africa from tough situations. She also showcased her adaptability, initially playing in the lower-order before being moved to the middle-order, where she continued to excel.

Her bowling was equally impressive, taking five wickets in T20Is, including a career-best 2/5 against Sri Lanka in March during a dominant home victory for South Africa.

Dercksen’s Stellar Bowling in ODIs and Tests:

In ODIs, she recorded a career-best 3/16 against England in the first ODI, helping secure a crucial win. Her bowling continued to shine in Tests as well, with notable performances against India and England. Her top score of 41 runs in Bloemfontein helped rebuild the innings with a 92-run partnership for the second wicket.

Memorable Performance:

Leading up to the Women’s T20 World Cup 2024, Dercksen had only one batting chance in the T20I series against Pakistan. However, in the series decider, with South Africa chasing a challenging 154, she stepped up under pressure. After early wickets fell, including Tazmin Brits and a crucial injury to Anneke Bosch, Dercksen delivered a blistering 44* off just 23 balls. Her knock included six boundaries and two sixes, including some big hits off experienced bowlers like Nida Dar and Sadia Iqbal. Her explosive innings led South Africa to a series-clinching victory, and she was named Player of the Match.
