Azmatullah Omarzai Named ICC Men’s ODI Cricketer of the Year
Afghanistan’s all-rounder Azmatullah Omarzai has been awarded the ICC Men’s ODI Cricketer of the Year 2024 for his remarkable performances throughout the year. The 24-year-old showcased exceptional skill with both bat and ball, playing a pivotal role in Afghanistan’s successful ODI campaigns.
Omarzai scored a total of 417 runs and took 17 wickets in 14 matches during 2024, finishing as one of the top performers for Afghanistan. His batting average of 52.12 highlighted his consistency, and he was second only to Rahmanullah Gurbaz in terms of runs scored. As a bowler, he was Afghanistan’s second-highest wicket-taker, following his teammate AM Ghazanfar.
The all-rounder’s performances were critical in Afghanistan’s four consecutive ODI series wins against Ireland, South Africa, Bangladesh, and Zimbabwe. One of his standout moments came during a thrilling 86-run knock off 50 balls against South Africa, where his quick-fire innings helped Afghanistan secure a historic series win. Omarzai’s brilliance was also on display against Bangladesh, where he bowled superbly in the death overs and later scored an invaluable 70 runs* from 77 balls, leading Afghanistan to a series-deciding victory.
His highest score of the year came in his first ODI of 2024 against Sri Lanka, where he scored a valiant 149 runs* in a losing effort, showcasing his potential to dominate the game with both bat and ball.
Azmatullah Omarzai’s all-round contributions in 2024 earned him the prestigious ICC Men’s ODI Cricketer of the Year award, cementing his place as one of the top all-rounders in world cricket.
