Major Blow for South Africa as Key Pacer Ruled Out of ICC Champions Trophy 2025

South Africa has suffered a significant setback ahead of the ICC Men’s Champions Trophy 2025, as key right-arm pacer Gerald Coetzee has been ruled out due to injury. Coetzee, who was part of the squad for the upcoming tri-nation ODI series and the Champions Trophy, will now miss both tournaments. The 24-year-old fast bowler was forced to withdraw after experiencing groin tightness during training. Upon further assessment by Cricket South Africa’s (CSA) medical staff, it was determined that the injury posed a risk of a more serious problem, especially with the increased workload expected in the 50-over format.

Coetzee’s absence adds to the already depleted fast-bowling resources for South Africa. Pacer Anrich Nortje was previously ruled out due to a back injury, and other bowlers like Nandre Burger, Lizaad Williams, Daryn Dupavillon, and Ottneil Baartman have also faced injuries, leaving the team’s attack significantly weakened.

CSA confirmed that Coetzee would not be available for selection for the ICC Men’s Champions Trophy 2025, which will take place in Pakistan from February 19 to March 9, 2025.

Reports suggest that fast-bowling all-rounder Corbin Bosch and pacer Lutho Sipamla are the top contenders to replace Coetzee in the squad for the prestigious eight-team tournament.
