PCB Defends Team Selection Amidst Criticism for Champions Trophy 2025
The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is facing criticism over the selection of Pakistan’s 15-member squad for the ICC Champions Trophy and the upcoming Tri-Nation series. However, sources within the PCB have strongly denied claims of political interference in the team’s selection. These sources clarified that the decision was made solely by the selection committee, without any external influence.
The sources also confirmed that the PCB Chairman does not intervene in the team selection process. The selection committee independently decided to include Faheem Ashraf and Khushdil Shah in the squad. While captain Mohammad Rizwan’s opinion was taken into account, the final decision was made by the selectors, with PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi playing no active role other than approving the final squad chosen by the committee.
An influential member of the selection committee emphasized that the team was selected purely based on merit, and claims of political interference or personal biases are completely unfounded. The source further explained that Aamer Jamal’s recent form led to his exclusion, while Faheem Ashraf was deemed a better option. Ashraf had previously been selected by Quetta Gladiators in the Platinum category before being called up to the national team. Khushdil Shah secured his place through consistent performances, whereas Shadab Khan was dropped due to his poor form.
The sources also pointed out that the selection committee and Pakistan’s cricket system are being unfairly criticized by some former cricketers for alleged political bias in team selection.
As for the ICC Champions Trophy and Tri-Nation series, sources revealed that the playing XI for these tournaments will be chosen by the national selectors. Head coach Aqib Javed, who is also a selector, will collaborate with other selectors like Azhar Ali, Asad Shafiq, Aleem Dar, and Hasan Cheema. Although Mohammad Rizwan’s input will be considered, the final decision will lie with the selectors.
Additionally, the sources highlighted that since the implementation of the new selection policy, Pakistan’s cricket team has shown improved performance. Pakistan won two Test matches against England and one against the West Indies, while the One Day International team secured series victories against Australia and South Africa. These successes reflect that the selectors’ decisions are steering the team in the right direction.
Another notable point was the inclusion of Usman Khan as a reserve wicketkeeper. In the event that Mohammad Rizwan is unavailable, Usman Khan is considered a more reliable backup than Haseebullah or Mohammad Haris.
Finally, the sources reiterated that while players may have political affiliations, suggesting that selections are based on political connections is completely baseless.
