Steve Smith Surpasses Younis Khan and Sunil Gavaskar in Test Cricket Records
Australia’s stand-in captain Steve Smith made history on Thursday with a brilliant 141-run innings in the first Test against Sri Lanka. His outstanding performance helped Australia reach a strong total of 468/3, with Usman Khawaja scoring a double century and Travis Head adding a quick fifty.
With this century, Smith moved ahead of cricket legends Younis Khan, Sunil Gavaskar, and Brian Lara on the list of players with the most Test centuries. Smith now has 35 Test hundreds, surpassing the trio, who each had 34.
Indian great Sachin Tendulkar still leads the list with 51 centuries, followed by Jacques Kallis (45) and Ricky Ponting (41).
Smith also passed Younis and Gavaskar in total career Test runs. With 10,140* runs, he overtook Gavaskar’s 10,122 and Younis’ 10,099, making him the 13th-highest run-scorer in Test cricket history. Tendulkar remains on top with 15,921 Test runs, followed by Ponting (13,378) and Kallis (13,289).
Among the modern-day “Fab Four” batters—Smith, Joe Root, Virat Kohli, and Kane Williamson—Smith now has the second-most Test centuries. Root leads with 40, while Smith has 35. Kohli and Williamson follow with 30 and 33 centuries, respectively.
