Varun Chakravarthy Added to India’s ODI Squad for Series Against England

India spinner Varun Chakravarthy has been added to the ODI squad for the upcoming three-match series against England. This inclusion comes after Chakravarthy’s exceptional performance in the recently concluded T20I series against England, where he was named Player of the Series.

Outstanding T20I Performance Leads to ODI Call-up

Chakravarthy was the standout bowler in India’s 4-1 victory over England in the T20I series, claiming 14 wickets at an impressive average of 9.86 and an economy rate of 7.66. His brilliant performance has earned him a spot in the ODI squad for the first time.

Varun traveled with the squad to Nagpur, where the first ODI will be played, and joined the team’s training session on Tuesday ahead of the series opener on Thursday.

Uncapped in ODIs, But Strong Domestic Record

Although Varun is uncapped in ODIs, he has made a mark in the domestic circuit. He has played only 23 List A matches and was the second-highest wicket-taker in the current season’s Vijay Hazare Trophy, taking 18 wickets in six matches for Tamil Nadu. His addition strengthens India’s spin attack, which already includes Kuldeep Yadav, Axar Patel, Ravindra Jadeja, and Washington Sundar.

Significance of the Inclusion

Varun’s inclusion is significant as the upcoming ODIs against England will be India’s first 50-over games since August last year. This series is also the only one before the ICC Champions Trophy 2025. With key bowlers like Kuldeep Yadav, Mohammed Shami, and Jasprit Bumrah returning from injuries, Varun could play an important role in India’s preparations for the Champions Trophy.

Bumrah, for instance, will only feature in the third ODI against England, with Harshit Rana included in the squad for the first two ODIs.

India will play England in three ODIs in Nagpur (Feb 6), Cuttack (Feb 9), and Ahmedabad (Feb 12), before heading to Dubai for the Champions Trophy. The squad for the Champions Trophy can be finalized until February 11 without approval from the ICC.
