Wasim Akram Calls Faheem Ashraf’s Selection “Out of the Blue” for Champions Trophy 2025

Former Pakistan cricket captain and legend Wasim Akram has voiced his concerns about the inclusion of Faheem Ashraf in Pakistan’s squad for the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, calling the decision “out of the blue.”

During a press conference, Akram expressed surprise at Ashraf’s selection, citing his recent performances, including a bowling average of 100 and a batting average of just 9 in his last 20 matches. He questioned the reasoning behind his selection, saying, “What else can I say now?”

“I haven’t thought about the team announcement yet. But a couple of things have stood out. For instance, Faheem Ashraf is in the team. I wish him all the best. He is a talented cricketer, but in the last 20 matches, his bowling average is 100, and his batting average is 9. He came out of the blue, and Khushdil also came out of the blue,” Akram commented.

Akram also raised concerns about Pakistan’s squad selection in general, particularly when compared to other teams globally. He highlighted that many teams, including India, are selecting more spinners due to the subcontinent’s conditions. Pakistan, however, has included only one proper spinner—Abrar Ahmed—for the Champions Trophy.

“We are taking just one spinner. India, on the other hand, has picked 3 to 4 spinners. There’s a reason they have chosen these players. Anyway, the team has been selected, and I wish the Pakistan team all the best,” Akram added.

It is worth noting that Faheem Ashraf’s last ODI appearance was against India on September 11, 2023, during the Asia Cup, where Pakistan had a disappointing campaign. Meanwhile, Khushdil Shah’s last ODI was on August 21, 2022, against the Netherlands, and since then, he has struggled to secure a spot in the team.
